THE BOOK CLUB OF CALIFORNIA
Announces the 2009 Grants Competition

THE BOOK CLUB OF CALIFORNIA has a program of grants to assist individuals in research, writing, and other projects in the fields of Western American history and the book arts. The Book Club provides individual grants in the range of $1,000 to individuals whose project proposals are judged most likely to result in a significant contribution in the form of a publication or an example of design printing. Awards are based on the scholarly or aesthetic merit of the individual proposals. The opening date for applications is January 3, 2009, and applications must be received by April 2, 2009.

BCC ANNUAL OSCAR LEWIS AWARDS TO BE HELD MARCH 23, 2009

You are cordially invited to attend one of the Book Club of California’s landmark annual events. On March 23, 2009 from 6:00 P.M.–8:00 P.M., we will honor Graham Mackintosh and Robert J. Chandler as the recipients, for 2009, of the Club’s prestigious Oscar Lewis Awards. Mr. Mackintosh is being honored for his lifetime contributions to the Book Arts and Mr. Chandler for his contributions to Western History.

Here are some further details:
Place: World Affairs Council Meeting Room Second Floor, 312 Sutter Street, San Francisco.

Program of Events: Mr. Mackintosh and Mr. Chandler will each be presented with a Certificate and an Honorarium, in celebration of their lifetime achievement, and will be invited to speak briefly about their contributions. A jazz trio will perform both before and after the presentations, and appetizers and beverages will be served. Each guest will receive a special keepsake printed by Mr. Mackintosh.

Cost: Each guest will be asked at the door for a contribution of $10.

Oscar Lewis Awards

The Club established the Oscar Lewis Awards in 1994 in honor of the prolific and popular San Francisco writer-historian who served as The Book Club secretary from 1921 to 1946.

The 2008 annual Oscar Lewis Awards of The Book Club of California honors Malcolm Margolin for his contributions to Western History and David Lance Goines for his contributions to the Book Arts.
